10WSPA NEWS | ISSUE 3 Gentle touch: Nop Rinda examines a patient at the mobile clinic. In March, we asked you to give to our Cambodian ponies appeal. Your response was fantastic – more than £ 100,000 was raised. These donations have funded a mobile veterinary clinic and trained two newly graduated Cambodian vets – Hang Piseth and Nop Rinda – in equine veterinary care. They are now treating ponies around Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital. The project also educates owners in pony care and harnessing and trains farriers in shoeing and hoof trimming techniques. Many Cambodian ponies suffer terribly from lameness because of poor hoof care and rubber shoes, instead of well-fitting metal shoes. Ponies often work from dawn to dusk with little chance to rest. WSPA Asia veterinary programmes manager Kate Blaszak describes the suffering: " When the team first visited Cambodia to investigate setting up the project, they saw several ponies in terrible pain. They had severe wounds due to poor harnesses and were very lame. The owners could not rest the ponies to let them get better because they needed them to make a living and they did not have the knowledge nor money to improve the harnesses." WSPA's involvement in Cambodia is building on the success of the Lampang pony project in Thailand which is run by the Help on the hoof in Cambodia CAMPAIGN Lampang Pony Welfare Organisation ( LPWO). In four years, LPWO has treated thousands of Thai ponies and educated hundreds of owners in horse and pony care. Hang Piseth and Nop Rinda trained with the project for six months earlier this year. " Our learning experience with LPWO was so important as we didn't have the opportunity to study equine medicine and welfare as part of our veterinary degrees. Because of this extra training and the opportunity to work with WSPA I know that we will be able to make a real difference to our country's working horses and ponies," says Nop Rinda. Your kindness and generosity has given the 30,000 hardworking ponies and horses of Cambodia a much brighter future… How your donations can help £ 8 can buy four new bits to replace cruel wire bits £ 45 can treat 30 ponies from harness- related wounds £ 200 can pay the salaries of two graduate vets for one month £ 1,000 can pay for 11 months worth of veterinary medicines to treat sick and injured ponies WSPA NEWS | ISSUE 311 The generosity of our supporters allows us to campaign and deliver projects capable of creating a world where animal welfare matters and animal cruelty ends.
