Supporter voices... I have just become a sponsor of WSPA and regret not doing it sooner. I intend to help as much as I can to help stop barbaric torture of animals. I am looking forward to my newsletter. Keep up your very good work. Vivien McLeish, Scotland Keep up the fantastic work your organisation is doing. WSPA is brilliant and effective. Thank goodness there is an organisation targeting key issues, educating for change and raising awareness within our fragile world. Aliah Syed, England No to bear bile Thank you to everyone who has already supported our September appeal to help stop bear farming. There are around 12,000 bears being cruelly farmed in Asia to provide bile for use in Traditional Asian Medicines and other products such as wine, shampoo and toothpaste. The pain the bears endure as bile is extracted from their gall bladders is excruciating. Thanks to your support we can: • pay enforcement teams to expose cruel and illegal practices • promote the use of herbal alternatives • work in partnership with Asian governments to bring bear farming to an end. No escape: Caged for the bear bile trade. When Cyclone Nargis devastated Myanmar in May, killing around 48 million animals, your quick response to our emergency appeal enabled us to respond immediately and help the survivors. We found farm animals such as buffalo and cattle that were traumatised, wounded and vulnerable to life- threatening diseases. Thanks to you, throughout May, June and July we set up and managed four emergency animal health centres and ran mobile clinics. Animals were treated for wounds, pneumonia and other ailments and vaccinated against life-threatening illnesses like foot and mouth disease. We also donated and distributed 120 tonnes of animal feed. A follow- up visit is planned subject to UN funding. " We hope to help rebuild the local veterinary infrastructure; provide hands- on training for local vets in best practice, nutrition, treating parasites, and internal medicine; and provide further first aid and much- needed disease prevention work," says James Sawyer WSPA's disaster relief operations manager.
