News Flash 4 AULA Conection Against the backdrop of uncertain economic times, Antioch University Los Angeles continues to do extremely well - we are experiencing an unprecedented breadth and depth of vitality. Many exciting activities are featured throughout this magazine. Here are just a few quick highlights of new happenings around campus. Exploring an Online Associate's Degree The beginning stages of conversations continue with Compass Knowledge Group, a firm helping us explore the possibility of an Associate of Arts degree that would be offered online beginning as early as 2011. The B. A. in Liberal Arts program now offers a new minor area of concentration in LGBT/ Queer Studies. Students can take LGBT-affirmative courses such as Queer History of Los Angeles, LGBT Identity Issues, and Gay & Lesbian History in Documentary Film. The AULA Institute is up and running and moved into their new digs - located across the courtyard from the main building in C1050 ( next door to the Antioch University Counseling Center). The AULA Institute supports initiatives consistent with our University's mission by assisting both internal and external community members in navigating the world of grants, contracts, research and proposals. The Institute can be reached at 310- 578- 1080 ext. 233. The Student Action Network is a dedicated group that fosters community, plans and executes mission- consistent events, and raises awareness of important social issues on and beyond campus. The entire AULA community ( including alumni) is always welcome to their weekly meetings: Wednesdays at 4: 30 p. m. in Room 1015. Don't miss the November 5th cooking demo and competition ( see calendar on page 22). AULA is in the final approval stages for our first new degree program in over ten years. The Master of Arts in Urban Sustainability has been approved at all levels within the University and is now under review with our regional accrediting bodies. We hope for a positive news announcement before the holidays. Read more about the new M. A. on page 26. Our Board of Trustees ( BOT) now has a full complement of 15 ( minimum - the bylaws allow for 5- 25) voting members. The BOT held its second meeting on campus on September 18th and will meet again on December 4th and 5th. Check out our BOT members on page 38. Connect with other AULA alumni, students, faculty, staff and community members on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter! We're building our virtual sustainable community - Join us, won't you? SOMETHING'S GOING ON, and Don Strauss is a part of it. He wants us to grab those flat- tired old Schwinns, Treks, Huffys and Giants from our basements and garages. He wants us to pick up a wrench and put down our car keys. " In my heart I'm a radical cyclist, but in practice I have a way to go." A long- time environmental activist and climate change communicator, Strauss first learned about the growing bike movement through his son, Morgan. ( CONTINUED ON PAGE 7) www. AntiochLA. edu 5 |
