WSPA GLOBAL REVIEW 2006 33 L O B A L I M P A C T F O R A N I M A L S In focus WSPA (Africa) Education Manager, Raphael Omondi, tackled the bushmeat trade in the communities around Tsavo National Park throughout 2006. The trade causes a host of welfare problems for wild animals through cruel killing methods like snaring and trapping. Raphael works with around eight schools representing more than 200 children in the area. His smiles and creative lessons using WSPA resources have proved very popular with local people. He also works with Tsavo’s adult community members and has helped to form Kidong’u Ex-Poachers Welfare Group. This group is a community-based, 40-strong organisation that strives to bring an end to poaching in the area and promotes alternative livelihoods like bicycle taxis and free-range poultry farming.
