GHI FEBRUARY 2008 53 handling news baggage Fairbanks chooses specialist for upgrade Logan Teleflex, a manufacturer and integrator of baggage handling systems, has won a US$3.6m contract to supply its leading-edge technology to Fairbanks International airport in Alaska. The contract was awarded as part of the Fairbank’s expansion programme for modernising and expanding the airport. Logan Teleflex will complete Phase 1 of the project in March this year, and has set a target of March 2009 for Phase 2. The order follows on from Logan Teleflex’s successful collaboration with Alaska Airlines to implement an innovative, completely in-line Two-Step process of passenger check-in for the carrier at Ted Stevens Anchorage International airport. Working with the contractor Davis Constructors and baggage handling systems consultant URS Corporation, Logan Teleflex will supply a new In-Line explosive detection system-enabled baggage handling solution as part of the renovation and expansion programme for the existing terminal. The Logan Teleflex EDS-enabled baggage handling system utilises three CTX 5500 GE/Invision series explosive detection machines and includes ticketing, screening and bag sortation on to two crescent plate make-up carousels. The system will also include two inbound systems with stainless steel slope plates and two regional carrier ticketing systems. Phase 1 of the project actually began in October 2007 and comprises the majority of the above components, with the two regional carrier ticketing systems designed to come on-stream in Phase 2. Logan’s innovative Two-Step check-in is setting the pace when it comes to passenger check-in methods. First developed in conjunction with Alaska Airlines for Ted Stevens Anchorage International, such a design virtually eliminates the need for conventional check-in counters. The Fairbank’s project includes 13 Two-Step check-in units. Here, a passenger will use a kiosk to type in the required details for his flight – or he can book on-line at home. The traveller is subsequently issued with a boarding pass that he takes, together with any luggage, to one of the 13 two-step check-in units. The passenger presents the bag to the scale unit to check that it conforms to weight regulations and passes the ticket to the agent. If all is in order, the passenger walks straight to the gate. Overall, the system is designed to speed up the ticketing process and reduce passenger congestion. 54 FEBRUARY 2008 GHI expo 2008 Airport If you haven’t already ringed April 8-10 in your diary, now is the time to do so.
