2 JUNE 2008 GHI handling news ground According to Mack Brooks, the recent Airport Expo 2008 was a success. This was despite the hurdle of cancelled flights and general disruption in travel schedules during a difficult period for the airlines. Industry response was positive and a number of exhibitors expressed interest in the scheduling of the next show. Airport Expo 2008 drew nearly 1,600 attendees over the three days of the show. Unique to the event was a special outdoor live demonstration area that featured ongoing product presentations. Another area of interest was the show floor area dedicated to a series of independently produced technical seminars; indeed some drew standing room only crowds. Ground Handling International’s stand attracted the golfers thanks to the putting game available. Over the show period plenty of delegates tried their hand but the prizes finally went to Brian Schaefer, Manager of Ground Equipment Maintenance at American Airlines and Bjorn Zutt, Driessen Air Cargo Equipment’s General Manager. Slots filled at Vegas Coventry airport has just signed a £30m contract with City Aviation Services (CAS) to outsource a number of key personnel including those involved in baggage, cleaning and in a significant move for the airport, security. In doing this, Coventry is believed to be the first UK airport to outsource its entire security department, a move that has been fully supported by the Department for Transport. The airport’s management team is convinced the appointment of CAS is of great benefit to the station, its passengers and most importantly, the personnel involved. CAS, a UK-based aviation services specialist established in 1997, has already been working with the airport for more than 11 years. In the spring of 1997 the company was initially As discussions regarding the provision of security personnel progressed, other key positions were also considered and last month a contract was signed between CAS and Coventry airport to provide security, car parks, cleaning, baggage and driving staff. CAS has taken responsibility for the contracts of personnel who were previously employed directly by the station. “We were very keen to ensure job security for our employees,” continues Chris Orphanou. “We are therefore very pleased that no personnel have been made redundant during this transition.” “We are delighted to have the opportunity to further develop our excellent working relationship with Coventry airport,” agrees Karl Chester, Company Secretary at CAS. “We are especially pleased that job security can be assured. Our personnel are highly trained in their areas of expertise and our team will continue to provide the very best quality staffing solutions to the airport.” During the past year Coventry airport’s management has put in place an extensive forward thinking development plan. To date some £10m has been invested in improvements to the airport and the management team has lodged an appeal against the recent decision by Government ministers to reject the airport’s planning application to construct a new terminal building for up to 2m passengers a year. A High Court hearing is scheduled to take place in July. Outsourcing gathers pace contracted to provide cargo and car park staff to the airport. It was during 2004 that CAS first began to supply back-up security personnel to cover staff holidays and sickness. “Our existing relationship with CAS was a key factor when we first considered outsourcing our security department,” says Chris Orphanou, Coventry airport’s CEO. “Over the past four years, CAS has grown with the passenger service operations at the airport. They have organised their own Level One Security training courses, provided uniforms for their staff and have given invaluable backup to our own operation. We are more than satisfied that CAS will surpass our personnel requirements in all departments.” Bjorn Zutt, General Manager, Driessen Air Cargo Equipment Brian Schaefer, Manager, Ground Equipment Maintenance, American Airlines
